ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF PISONIA GRANDIS R . Br LEAF EXTRACT AND ITS FRACTION

ABSTRACT
Pisonia grandis ( Family Nyctaginaceae) commonly known as “
Lachaikottai keerai, The leaves are used in our traditional system of
medicine the as analgesic,anti inflammatory, diuretic and
hypoglycemic agent. So in the present study the antimicrobial activity
of leaf extract of Pisonia grandis and its flavanoid rich fraction
wascarried out. The zone of inhibition by agar well diffusion and disc
diffusion methods were measured for determining antimicrobial action
of aqueous and its Ethylacetate fractions. The results were compared
with that of standard antibiotics (Ampicillin and Cefotoxime)The
Ethylacetate fraction of Pisonia grandis exhibited significant
antimicrobial activity against S.aureus, E.coli, K.pneumoniae and
C.albicans.. Among the methods the agar disc diffusion method
showed better result compared to that wel diffusion method. The
fraction was most effective against S.aureus,with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 1.2
mg/ml.The antimicrobial activity of ethylacetate fraction of Pisonia grandis was found to be
effective in inhibiting the growth of S.aureus than aqueous extract which may be due to
presence of phenolic compounds such as flavanoids fractions.
