THIOMERS FRESH DRIFT OF POLYMERS & THEIR PROSPECTIVE IN PHARMACEUTICALS: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Use of polymers within the field of pharmaceutics as a tool for drug delivery has augmented rapidly in time one amongst such category of polymers referred to as Thiolated polymers just about known as thiomers are mucoadhesive basis polymers, macromolecules hydrophilic presenting free thiol groups on the polymeric chain. Based on chemical reactions like oxidation or thiol/disulphide bonds are shaped between such polymers and mucous secretion glycoproteins which are made in cysteine subdomains over the mucus gel layer. Thiomers mimic so the natural function of mucus glycoproteins, considered Biomimetic nature of the gut mucosal layer which are also covalently anchored within the mucus layer by the formation of disulphide bonds—the bridging ordinarily found within the biotic systems. These exhibit improved mucoadhesive properties as a result of valence connexion to glycoproteins of the mucus. This functionalization leads to manipulation of polymeric structure improving properties compared with the analogous basic polymers. It has been established in studies, that thiomers exhibit controlled release as well as permeation enhancing properties accelerator and efflux pump inhibitory mucoadhesive properties. Thiomers can be directly compressed to tablets or given as solutions. Likewise thiomer based formulations in range of micro and nano have been developed. This review covers an outline of the mechanism of classification mechanisms, options and formulations containing thiomers with their pharmaceutical applications.
